The best Gluhwein (mulled wine) in Luxembourg

Every December I embark on a Gluhwein quest, trying to discover the best place for this amazing Christmas drink. So you can imagine my happy spirits before Christmas- but of course it’s all for a good cause – I want to taste real Christmas in a cup.   

And it’s definitely not an easy task. Though the Christmas market in Luxembourg is not very big, there is quite a variety when it comes to the quality of wine. There is one stand – the train that is in front of Cercle Cite - that sells a sort of drink that is more like hot artificial juice than wine.

Anyway, after trying almost everything, I found my place of joy. It’s located in the Christmas market from Gaelle Frau, very close to the back and they sell the best one I’ve tasted so far. The alcohol is not burnt out and you can actually taste the flavor of infused spices. Just a sip and you forget about the cold.

Plus, they have these cute mugs that look like a Christmas tree.

Again a weekend full of events and things to do in Luxembourg. The Chirstmas markets are open, so there is always a new thing to try out there. But if you’re tired of being outside in the cold, MUDAM had a great idea – this Friday they have organized the first event from the series Friday Nights at MUDAM.

I was too lazy and tired and unfortunately I couldn’t go to the first edition, but the next one from 27^th of December is definitely on my list.

The plan sounds like fun, as you can register for a free guided visit in English of the exhibition or just hang out in the restaurant with your friends. The impressive installations created by Lee Bul are still at the museum, so in December will be a good opportunity to see them.

International Bazaar

The International Bazaar is a very nice tradition in Luxembourg – every year a group of volunteers organizes at Luxexpo a multicultural event that attracts thousands of visitors and raises lots of money for charity. 

This year 70 national stands sell various national products, from food to Christmas decorations or book and donate all the earnings for almost 100 charities. The Bazaar will be open until Sunday, 1^st of December.

Have an inspiring start!

Mondays are always difficult to cope with, but at the beginning of every week I try to map a list of inspiring things to look forward to or to think about. And this makes everything easier.

It’s been so cold these days that I can only think about Christmas markets, with the hot wine and sausages. This year I’m dreaming of visiting Colmar, one of the prettiest little town in the world, that hosts every year a famous and idyllic market.

Or to go to Trier to eat a Germknödel, my favorite German/Austrian deserts in the world - a fluffy yeast dough dumpling with a mix of poppy seeds and sugar, filled with spicy plum jam and floating in a sea of vanilla sauce. We don’t have that in Luxembourg, but I’ve tried last year in Trier and it was pretty good.

As we’re talking about the Christmas markets, I can’t wait to start the annual Gluhwein quest in Luxembourg. Last year I found my favorite at a stall near Circle Cite, but who knows, maybe we’ll have something new this year.

The rain has been with us for some time now, so I hope it goes away to visit other places and I finally can take a long walk in the forest that looks amazing with the autumn clothes.

On Sunday I listened to the wonderful Michael Nyman Band, an energizing and inspiring experience to hear them play live. One of my favorite songs was the soundtrack of “The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover”, an artsy British-French movie that is now on my “to be seen movies” list.

Plus, I need to start planning on my Christmas decoration list, so I have created a special board in Pinterest to help me with that.

Sundays in Luxemourg - Chouette, un dimanche au musée!

Villa Vauban is my favorite museum in town – the location is lovely, the museum is small enough to not get bored and they always have new and exciting exhibition ideas. 

Have you visited the Merci de ne pas nourrir! exhibition? Amazing!

If you haven’t visited the museum lately, you can spend this Sunday (10^th of November) there from 15:00. And don’t worry about the children, the organizers announce special animations that will keep them occupied during your visit. Reservation is mandatory, so you should book in advance.

Plan your happy weekend

Thursdays are almost weekend and because it’s always good to plan in advance, here are some suggestions for a nice weekend out and about in Luxembourg.  

Michelin has just published the Bib Gourmand guide, the budget version of the famous Michelin Guide that lists places where you can have a gastronomic meal for an average price of less than 35 euros per 3 course menu. Michael Nyman Band is playing on Saturday, 9^th of November, at Rockhal (the concert was supposed to take place at Philarmonie, but they changed due to production matters). It’s going to be an incredible show, as Nyman is considered one of Britain’s most innovative composers – he has written operas, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. His most famous work is the music for The Piano, the soundtrack album that sold 3 million copies.
